To better help customers choose a suitable 3D scanner, we did a scanning test on a wood carving to see the performance of iReal 2E and a 3D laser scanner. Both come from Scantech but were born with different market positions and different functions.
Wood carvings tend to have complicated and delicate geometric features, and are hard for some 3D scanners to capture complete 3D data. Therefore, it is a good tool to test the scanning abilities of different 3D scanners. What is more, this wood carving is hand-carved, which means the 3D scanner should be able to capture sharper edges.
3D scanning test on a wood carving
We set the resolution of iReal 2E at 0.2 mm, and for the 3D laser scanner, we chose the resolution of 0.1 mm, 0.2 mm, and 0.05 mm. Now, let’s see how the entire process goes and how the results look.
To begin with, we used the iReal 2E color 3D scanner to scan this wood carving. It adopts infrared structured light and has multiple advantages, such as a large Field of View (580 x 550 mm), deep depth of field (720 mm), color scanning ability, and is suitable for medium and large-sized objects. This wood carving is rich in geometric features, the feature alignment mode of iReal 2E is suitable for this task.
As for the 3D laser scanner, we used KSCAN-Magic from Scantech to scan this wood carving. The resolution setting is also 0.2 mm. The KSCAN-Magic innovatively combines infrared and blue lasers as its light source, and its accuracy is up to 0.02 mm. Using it to scan this wood carving can greatly restore the details of the carving.
Scanning result comparison
After the scanning, input the scan data to the scanning software separately. We can see the difference directly from the data below.
It is clearly seen that the scanned result by KSCAN-Magic is more complete and sharper than that of iReal 2E, while data obtained by iReal 2E look more rough: the edges of the wood carving is not as fine as the data by KSCAN-Magic.
Of course, when it comes to the accuracy and the finess, iReal 2E may not be as perfect as an industrial-grade 3D laser scanner such as KSCAN-Magic. However, people need to think from different prospects when buying a 3D scanner: the budget, their needs, the scanned objects, the scanning environment, etc. If you have a higher requirement for accuracy and the finess, the 3D laser scanner will be a perfect fit.
But if you are one of the followings, you should consider iReal 2E instead:
● You want to 3D scan the human body or human body parts (iReal 2E is suitable for scanning human body or human body parts, with the ability of hair scanning).
● The object you will be scanning is larger than 30 cm (iReal 2E is suitable for scanning medium and large-sized objects for its large Field of View).
● You are looking for an entry-level professional 3D scanner with a limited budget (The iReal 2E is only $3,980 at the Ex-works price).
● The color capturing ability is crucial for you (iReal 2E supports color scanning, which can greatly save the time and money of post-processing).
● You will be scanning delicate objects or you don’t want to stick markers on the scanned object (Sticking markers is not required under iReal 2E’s feature alignment mode and texture alignment mode).
