3D scanning

When scanning the C919 aircraft model with the KSCAN-Magic 3D laser scanner, we used a resolution of 0.4 mm mainly for the following reasons:

The geometric features of the aircraft model change less (with more large curved areas on the surface), 3D scanning it under a resolution of 0.4 mm not only can fully restore the details of the item, but also to achieve the minimum of the data file. Plus, the KSCAN-Magic 3D scanner is very compatible with scanned objects, from small coins to large airplanes.

We chose to remove the airplane wheels to save time and to facilitate the scanning process. After scanning, we took the forward and reverse alignment method in Geomagic Wrap, a 3D model editing software, for simple post-processing of the model.

Photographing

The camera we used was a Sony SLR camera, because the model of the plane is relatively large, we used a normal lens (when the model is small, you can use a DSLR camera with a macro lens, and the effect is better); and the model of this plane is simple with color elements, in order to better mapping, we need to place a patterned pad at the bottom of the model to assist mapping before taking pictures.

We also placed it at two angles to take photos, a total of five circles, 32 photos per circle, and a total of 320 photos. The camera angle is not strictly divided. Basically, the top shot is an angle, and the flat shot can be another angle. If you have high requirements for the text details on the model, you can use the macro lens to shoot the text part separately, and then just do a single mapping.

3D color texture mapping

After the model and photos are prepared, we do the mapping in 3DeVOK Mapping Software. Since the object only changes its position once and has fewer texture features, we need a patterned pad for recognition. So in accordance with the two different placements of the model, the grouping was carried out, divided into two groups, and when the mainbody is extracted, you need to bring the patterned pad for extraction, so that the relative orientation results will basically not be a problem. Next, just follow the flow chart one by one.

During the texture mapping process, keep note to select two photogalleries simultaneously. When editing the seamline, try to ensure that the text part is mapped by a single picture, so as to avoid a distortion of the text caused by multiple pictures. In the use of retouching software Photoshop or three-dimensional software such as Blender for texture post-processing, because of the model’s material features, there will be individual areas of reflection, which can be solved by stamping. If you feel that the text color is a little light, you can choose the deepening tool in PS to deepen the color of the font.
