Have you ever stood in front of a museum display case wishing you could get just a little closer?

For obvious conservation reasons, that isn't possible.

 

But what if the story of museum restoration could become something you could actually touch?

 

Inspired by the transparent restoration project at Zhejiang Provincial Museum, 3DeVOK has explored a new possibility: transforming the concept of transparent restoration into a museum-inspired cultural product that brings digital heritage closer to everyday life.

 

Rather than reproducing an artifact exactly as it once appeared, the design celebrates the restoration itself—revealing where history ends and modern conservation begins.

Inspired by Transparent Restoration

The idea originated from the exhibition "Restoration & Decoration – The Art of Ceramic Repair and Ornamentation," held at Zhejiang Provincial Museum in April 2026.

 

The exhibition showcased an innovative conservation approach that combines 3D scanning, digital reconstruction, and transparent 3D printing. Instead of concealing damaged areas, missing sections were reconstructed using transparent materials, allowing visitors to distinguish the original artifact from the restored portions.

 

 

This philosophy—making restoration visible rather than invisible—became the inspiration behind the cultural product.

 

From Ancient Fragments to a Touchable Object

During the restoration project, the team used the 3DeVOK MT handheld 3D scanner to digitize fragmented ceramics through a fully non-contact workflow.

 

With a resolution of up to 0.1 mm, the MT 3D scanner captured intricate glaze crackles, chipped edges, and subtle surface textures with exceptional accuracy, providing reliable digital data for virtual reconstruction.

 

Once the missing structures had been digitally rebuilt, transparent resin components were produced using 3D printing and carefully finished by conservators before being integrated with the original ceramics.

 

The result was not only a restored artifact, but a new way of presenting history—one that makes every restoration intervention clearly visible.

After the exhibition concluded, one question remained:

 

Could this restoration philosophy exist beyond museum galleries?

 

That question inspired the creation of these transparent restoration decorative pieces.

 

Rather than functioning as conventional replicas, they reinterpret museum conservation through contemporary design. Every piece preserves the visual language of transparent restoration while transforming it into an object that people can display, appreciate, and most importantly, touch.
