SCANOLOGY Joins the 7th Hangzhou Liangzhu Day, Showcasing How 3D Digitization Supports Cultural Heritage Preservation
Date: 2026-07-10

On July 6, 2026, the 7th Hangzhou Liangzhu Day brought together cultural heritage experts, international representatives, and other participants to explore new approaches to heritage conservation and cross-cultural exchange.

SCANOLOGY participated as the only invited enterprise representative in the event, sharing practical insights into how 3D digitization can support cultural heritage preservation, restoration, and public engagement.

Held at the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City, the event featured the Liangzhu and the World: Liangzhu Ancient City–Samarkand Ancient City Dialogue. More than 120 guests from China and Uzbekistan gathered to discuss the origins, evolution, conservation, and contemporary relevance of their respective civilizations.

Against this backdrop, SCANOLOGY highlighted how 3D scanning technology can connect heritage conservation with digital innovation, helping preserve valuable cultural assets while making their stories more accessible to the public.

Sharing New Perspectives on Cultural Heritage Digitization

During the roundtable discussion on heritage activation and contemporary communication, SCANOLOGY's Chief Business Officer shared the company's experience in applying 3D digitization to cultural heritage projects.

Traditional conservation and restoration work can often seem distant from everyday audiences. Digital technologies, combined with exhibitions, documentaries, and online video content, offer new ways to communicate the work behind artifact preservation and help more people appreciate its value.

SCANOLOGY's experience demonstrates how non-contact 3D scanning can capture detailed geometric information from cultural artifacts, providing digital data for documentation, reconstruction, restoration planning, and further research.

These applications extend beyond individual artifacts. By creating accurate digital records of cultural and natural heritage, 3D digitization can also support long-term documentation and provide reusable digital resources for research, education, and public engagement.

From Ancient Artifacts to Digital Restoration: 3D Scanning in Practice

SCANOLOGY's 3D digitization technology has been applied across a range of cultural heritage projects, from archaeological research to artifact restoration.

Supporting Archaeological Research in Egypt

In a joint archaeological project in Egypt, 3DeVOK MT professional 3D scanning technology was used to capture detailed data from artifacts excavated at the Temple of Bastet site in North Saqqara, including mummies and inscribed objects.

The resulting digital data supported archaeological research and helped document valuable discoveries. Related work has also reached wider audiences through documentaries, educational videos, and other media formats, bringing archaeological research closer to the public.

Helping Reconstruct the Sanxingdui Sacred Tree

In the restoration of the Sanxingdui bronze sacred tree, SCANOLOGY supported high-precision 3D data acquisition of its branches. The digital data provided an important reference for virtual assembly and structural reconstruction, helping specialists study how the components fit together and support the reconstruction process.

3D digitization has also been used in projects involving dinosaur fossils in Lufeng, Yunnan, and the Yungang and Longmen Grottoes, supporting the documentation and digital preservation of significant natural and cultural heritage.

Enabling Transparent Restoration of Ancient Ceramics

Transparent restoration offers another compelling example of how 3D scanning can support artifact conservation.

At Zhejiang Provincial Museum, the 3DeVOK MT 3D scanner was used in an ancient ceramic restoration project to capture the geometry of fragmented artifacts. The resulting 3D data supported digital modeling and reconstruction, providing a reference for planning the restoration of missing sections.

By combining 3D scanning, digital reconstruction, and transparent 3D printing, restoration specialists can recreate missing structures while keeping the original fragments visible. This approach helps audiences better understand both the artifacts' original forms and the restoration work undertaken to preserve them.

A related project involving a Liangzhu black pottery ding with fish-fin-shaped feet also demonstrates the potential of digital technologies in transparent ceramic restoration. Through non-contact 3D data acquisition and digital reconstruction, missing structures can be recreated in a way that makes the restoration process easier to observe and appreciate.

These projects illustrate how 3D scanning can provide a digital foundation for restoration while helping bridge the gap between specialist conservation work and public understanding.

Connecting Technology, Heritage, and Public Engagement

The 7th Hangzhou Liangzhu Day highlighted the importance of international dialogue and new approaches to protecting and sharing cultural heritage. SCANOLOGY's participation reflected the growing role of digital technologies in supporting this work.

From archaeological documentation to transparent restoration, 3D scanning can help capture the details of fragile artifacts, support reconstruction workflows, and create digital records for future research. When combined with digital modeling, 3D printing, and engaging communication formats, these capabilities can also make conservation processes easier for the public to understand.

SCANOLOGY will continue to explore the applications of 3D digitization in cultural heritage preservation, contributing digital expertise to the documentation, study, and restoration of valuable cultural assets.

By connecting technology with heritage, digital innovation can help bring the past into clearer focus and create new ways for future generations to discover and appreciate the world's cultural legacy.
